Word of mouth is a reference to the passing of information from person to person. Originally the term referred specifically to oral communication^[1] (literally words from the mouth), but now includes any type of human communication, such as face to face, telephone, email, and text messaging.

A few weeks ago i've joined "Buzzer" in The Netherlands and i must say i'm pretty surprised and enthousiastic about this concept !

I've received my first Buzz-kit and started to tell my friends, co-workers and family about this new product i'm buzzin' about, it's Sanex Natur Protect. People around me who i present a mini-buzz-kit are very happy and ask me how it works. They all know and like the Sanex deodorants and are willing to try the new Natur Protect samples.
You need to write a report about the Buzzin' and tell if people like the new product!

I like the new Nature Protect Deo a lot and i'm very picky about deodorants.
If i use another deo with alcohol in it, it always itches but this one
is really good and fresh and no itch !

Cramps frontman Lux Interior died Wednesday at a Glendale, Calif., hospital as the result of a pre-existing heart condition, the band's publicist confirmed to Billboard. He was 62.

The Cramps formed in 1976 and were part of the now legendary downtown New York punk scene. Their lineup shifted over the years but always included Lux and his wife, Poison Ivy. The band's rockabilly-infused punk has been credited as an influence by bands including the White Stripes and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Interior, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser, was born October 21, 1946, in Ohio.

He met Ivy in 1972 and started the band shortly thereafter.

The Cramps released 14 albums over the course of their career, their latest being 2004's "How To Make a Monster." Their best-selling album, 1984's "Bad Music for Bad People" has sold 95,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Statue of 'Elvis' chiselled 1800 years before his birth goes under the hammer

With his dashing chiselled features, swept back hair and perky bouffant the resemblance is unmistakable.
But incredibly this carving of Elvis Presley was created around 1800 years before the King of Rock and Roll first warbled his first note.
The amazing likeness has come to light as part of a sale of ancient antiques by the auction house Bonhams.

The Roman Elvis is in fact a genuine marble acroterion - a kind of architectural ornament often found for decoration on the corners of a sarcophagus, a stone tomb or burial chamber.

It forms part of a collection owned by Melbourne-based Graham Geddes - one of the world's most foremost collectors - which is estimated to sell for more than £1m when it goes on sale in October.
Even the Geddes himself has nicknamed the astounding lookalike ‘Elvis’.
Antiquities specialist Georgiana Aitken added: 'It bears an uncanny likeness to Elvis Presley. It's the quiff that does it.
You do some weird and wacky things at the corners of sarcophagi.

'I don't know what purpose they served and the quiff was not a hairstyle of the day as far as I know.'
The 'Elvis’ sculpture is 2nd Century AD and is estimated to make £25,000 to £30,000.
A spokesman for Bonhams said: "It is perhaps the strangest item in the sale, certainly to modern eyes.
"Fans of the King of Rock 'n Roll, seeing this face from the distant past will be forgiven for thinking that their idol may well have lived a previous life in Rome!

"Looking at this face with its Elvis-like quiff, strong jaw and nose, one is inevitably led to the thought that the human face for all is diversity and subtlety has after all an ability to repeat itself."

A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday.
The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including
Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

Man, those Russian can really drink! I mean, can you honestly be too drunk to notice somebody stuck
a knife in your back? Not figuratively speaking--
I know that happens all the time when one is intoxicated--I mean literally: a knife in your back.

As The Irish Examiner reports, a Russian electrician took the bus home from a vodka binge,
ate breakfast and slept off his hangover never realizing a kitchen knife had been plunged into his back.
The discovery was made by his wife who noticed the handle of the six-inch knife sticking out of his back when she went to wake him.

Yuri Lyalin, 53, said he had been sleeping peacefully before his wife woke him with the bad news. Fortunately, no vital organs were harmed, provided he still has any functioning vital organs left. I don't think he would exactly make the liver donor list.

Apparently, Lyalin's drinking partner is responsible for the stabbing. Why? The answer is engraved at the bottom of a vodka shot glass, my friends. I am sure he meant no harm.

SANTIAGO, Chile — A tourist from Finland faces a prison term and a fine after allegedly breaking a piece of volcanic rock from one of the massive Moai statues on Easter Island.

Twenty-six-year-old Marko Kulju is in custody. His tattoos gave him away.
A Rapanui woman says she surprised him as he broke off part of the ear
from a statue above Anakena beach.
She says he fled the scene with the hunk of rock.
Police say they identified him through his tattoos.

Easter Island's Moai statues were carved between 400 and
1,000 years ago. Some stand more than 70 feet tall and weigh 60 tons.

Mr Kulju was visiting Anakena beach on Sunday when he was allegedly seen
using his hands to tear off the earlobe of a 4m (13ft) high moai,
Easter Island Police Chief Cristian Gonzalez told the Associated Press.

The earlobe then fell to the ground and broke into 20-30cm pieces, at least one of which Mr Kulju allegedly attempted to steal, Mr Gonzalez added.

Now Kulju faces a potential prison term and a fine of US$1,900
if convicted of damaging a national monument.

Well he is, but in this modern new world of technology and science fiction turning into fact, it’s not that hard to understand. Of course it’s still bizarre, but it makes sense when you break it down.

Thomas Beatie was born a woman but opted to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
He no longer has breasts but retained his, for lack of a better term, girl parts.

The case is unusual but not the only one. Beatie admits his unusual circumstance has been greeted quite reluctantly by the medical community.

Beatie is married and he and his wife, Nancy, decided they wanted to have children. Nancy couldn’t get pregnant but Beatie could.

Thus the young couple began this journey which has had it’s ups and down.

Beatie also recently wrote an essay in The Advocate about his decision to go against the grain and create a family that he calls a “Labor of Love.”

MIAMI (Reuters) - A ray leaped onto a boat off the Florida Keys on Thursday and knocked a woman to the deck, killing her, wildlife investigators said.

"It's a bizarre accident," said Jorge Pino, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The woman and her family were aboard a boat in the Atlantic Ocean, off the city of Marathon in the Florida Keys, he said.

"A large ray jumped out of the water and collided with the victim," Pino said.

The impact threw the woman backward and she hit her head on the vessel, he said. Investigators initially said one of the animal's venomous barbs had stabbed her, but they later said there was no sign of a puncture.

"We believe she died as a result of the impact between herself and the spotted eagle ray," said Gabriella Ferraro, a spokeswoman for the wildlife commission.

The ray weighed about 80 pounds (36 kg) and had a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, Ferraro said.
The boat was traveling at about 25 mph (40 kph) when the animal collided with the woman, killing both, she said.

Investigators identified the woman as Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, of Pigeon, Michigan.

Spotted eagle rays are common in warm or tropical waters and are often seen near coral reefs. The can grow to more than 8 feet across and have two to six short, venomous barbs near the base of their whip-like tails, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's Web site.

The rays often swim near the water's surface and can leap out, especially when pursued, but are generally shy of humans.

"All rays leap out of the water from time to time but certainly to see one collide with a vessel is extremely unusual," Pino said.

In 2006, a spotted eagle ray leaped onto another boat in Florida waters off the Fort Lauderdale area and pierced the heart of an 81-year-old man with its barb. He survived.

Steve Irwin, the host of the "Crocodile Hunter" television show, was killed by another type of ray while filming underwater on Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 2006.

He died when a stingray's barb pierced his heart.

Beer bottles cleared from Mt.Everest

KATHMANDU: A Nepali airline cleared 17 tons of empty beer bottles and cans on Friday from around Lukla village, the main gateway for trekkers and climbers heading to Mount Everest base camp, a company official said.

Thousands of trekkers and mountain climbers from around the world go to the scenic Khumbhu region every year, towered by the 8,850 meter (29,035 feet) mountain.

The trekkers scatter tonnes of empty beer bottles, plastic packets and cans in Lukla.
On Friday, a private airline completed a huge clean up operation.

The bottles will be handed over to breweries for reuse, he added.

Kayle LeoGrande is a bundle of contradictions. Inked from head to toe, his tattoos exploding off his skin in a torrent of swirling energy, he is actually soft spoken and unassuming.
And unlike many of the young phenoms who have laid claim to the battle ground of the Elite National Criterium Championships before him, at 29 years old, Kayle has three children, is a former pro and the owner of a reputable tattoo shop, Classic Tattoo Parlor in Upland California. I sat down with Kayle at his studio to find out what it was like to win at Downers Grove and what the story was behind the tattoos that cover his body.

Kayle got his first tattoo at the age of 17, one year before the legal age. On a bike by the age of 8, he conquered the BMX world by age 12. Kayle spent the next five years racing road and mountain, winning the junior National Team Pursuit with David Clinger who would, coincidentally, go on to cover his entire face in an intricate Maori style tattoo. Over the next eight years, he continued getting tattoos and started learning the trade himself, while cycling faded farther and farther into the background. However, with 90% of his body covered in tattoos (none of them cycling themed), he never quite lost the cycling bug. He started riding again three years ago for fun and then started racing like he had never taken a break.

Now he is living the dream of every elite cyclist. He has a job he loves and the flexibility to train and race at the highest level. Plus, with team Kahala LaGrange, he enjoys an exceptional level of sponsorship, a strong team supporting him, and a flexible race schedule which allows him to spend time with his children and run his business.

Tattoos have become increasingly mainstream these days and that is as evident on the racing circuit as is anywhere else. Riders such as Richard Virenque, Ekimov, Mariano Friedick and Ivan Dominguez all have “tattys.” Even the Pez himself got inked a few months back. Kayle has inked riders such as New Zealand Champ Gord McCauley and former Downers Grove winner, Rahsaan Bahati and is certainly enjoying the growing trend. After a year and a half of ownership, business is booming. Each morning when he drives to work he must decide between his Yukon (black 22” rims), his 2006 Cadillac Escalade (27” rims) and his 2005 BMW 745 LI (again, 22s). However, on the day I went out to see him, he had ridden his 15 year old Bianchi with down tube shifters to the office.

HOLLYWOOD: "No Country for Old Men," Joel and Ethan Coen's chilling confrontation of a desperate man with a relentless killer, won the Academy Award for best picture on Sunday night.

The Coens, who are based in New York and remain aloof from the Hollywood establishment, also shared the directing and adapted screenplay awards. Accepting it, Ethan Coen thanked the Academy members for "letting us continue to play in our corner of the sandbox."

Javier Bardem won the fourth Oscar for "No Country," capturing the best supporting actor for his role as the cattlegun-wielding, pageboy-wearing serial killer. He thanked that film's directors, Joel and Ethan Coen, saying they "put one of the most horrible haircuts in history over my head."

A musician dubbed the David Beckham of the violin proved his talent lay all in his hands when he tripped up at the end of a concert and fell on his 300-year-old Stradivarius.

Blond-haired David Garrett fell on the 1710 masterpiece as he finished up at the Barbican, leaving it with damage that could cost £60,000 to repair.

The instrument, one of a small number of the cherished violins made by the venerated Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivari, will spend the next eight months in a workshop. It may never sound as good again.

German-born Garrett, 26, said: "I had just played a concert. I was all packed up and ready to go when I slipped and fell.

"People said it was as if I’d trodden on a banana skin.

"I fell down a flight of steps and on to the case. When I opened it the violin was in pieces. I was just sitting there on the floor," he recalled. "I couldn’t speak and I couldn’t get up. I didn’t even know if I was hurt - I didn’t care."

He said it was "like losing a dear friend" to break the violin, which he had played for eight years.

The accident left him without a violin to play his next concert at the Barbican on Valentine’s Day. Fortunately he had been offered the use of another Stradivarius from the maker’s so-called Golden Period, between 1700 and 1720.

London violin dealer J&A Beare has offered him use of a 1718 example, worth around £2.5 million.

David Morris, from J&A Beare, said: "We’ve lent it to him certainly for his concert in London and we will see what we can do for the foreseeable future."

He said there were only about 100 Golden Period 'Strad’ violins left in existence.

The damage Garrett inflicted would affect the first violin’s value, Mr Morris conceded. But he added hopefully: "Some of the modern restoration techniques are amazing."

After a Dutch journalist declared that his private investigation had solved the mysterious disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway, the chief prosecutor in Aruba announced today that he is reopening the case.

Reporter Peter R. de Vries said he used a sophisticated network of hidden cameras in what he called an "undercover operation" to obtain evidence that he claimed "has solved the mystery" of Holloway's disappearance on May 30, 2005.

The mystery behind the disappearance of the blond teenager has eluded efforts by the Aruba police and even the FBI for more than two years.

De Vries said he showed some of the key pieces of evidence to the Office of the Public Prosecutor of Aruba, Jan. 24, and the island's chief prosecutor, Hans Mos, announced today that he has "intensified [the] investigation of Natalee Holloway due to recently received information."

Mos had publicly closed the investigation last month after an exhausting and often frustrating two-year probe.

"This information may shed a new light on the mode of which Natalee Holloway has died and the method by which her body disappeared," Mos said today.

He credited de Vries with uncovering the leads and said, "This information may help considerably in the solution of the mystery of Natalee's disappearance."

De Vries said that he and his team had been conducting an undercover operation for several months, and that he would broadcast his findings in a special program on Dutch television this Sunday.

The only piece of the upcoming program the de Vries would release was a conversation between himself and Mos after he showed police the evidence he had collected. "Am I sitting opposite a happy man now?" de Vries asks Mos. The prosecutor is shown answering, "Now at least the truth is surfacing and with that we can at least wrap up this case."

The Alabama teenager disappeared after a boozy night in an Aruban nightclub during a high school graduation trip. She was last seen outside Carols 'n Charlies bar with Joran van der Sloot, who is from Holland, and the brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, from Aruba. They have twice been arrested, denied any involvement in her disappearance, and released due to lack of evidence.

After his latest release, Van der Sloot did a television interview with de Vries earlier this month where the reporter challenged his honesty. Van der Sloot was calm during the interview, but after the cameras were turned off he threw a glass of wine in de Vries' face.

The incident prompted de Vries to comment, "He doesn't have complete control over his behavior."

A GANG of crooks is robbing long-distance coaches by smuggling dwarves into their holds inside sports bags.

Once inside the buses the tiny thieves slip out from their hiding place to rifle through the belongings of travellers above them.

They then take their loot back to their hiding place and wait to be collected by another gang member when the coach reaches its destination.

The gang has stolen thousands of pounds in cash, gems and other valuables over the past several months.

Swebus, which operates coach services across Sweden, confirmed the losses.

“We think it is a short, young person, dwarves or perhaps children,” said Ingvar Ryggasjo, sales manager for Swebus.

“We are taking extra security measures and are thinking of installing video surveillance cameras.”

He said on one occasion a light-fingered little person was smuggled aboard a bus in a hockey bag.

One woman reported seeing two men squeezing the large, heavy bag into the luggage space under the bus. After arriving she found a camera, purse and other items missing.

Police are quizzing “people of limited stature” with criminal records, according to a spokesman in Stockholm.

Cairo - A young Bedouin in Egypt's Sinai peninsula has been sentenced to have his tongue cut out or hand over more camels after he made "naughty" remarks to a shepherdess, local media reported on Tuesday.

A tent-based tribal court in the desert region sentenced the unnamed man to pay 40 camels compensation to the woman as well as either have his tongue cut out or cough up another five camels, the Egyptian Gazette said.

It is now up to the woman, who hails from a different tribe, whether she would rather have the amputated tongue or additional camel.

The accused was not allowed to speak during the trial, the paper reported, adding that tribal justice "has helped keep the peace and maintain stability among the tribes of the desert for generations."

Balloon Monster Falls To Bits After Three Days' Work

Youngsters took three days to make a giant Nessie from 55,000 balloons - and saw it scattered in the wind in just seconds.
The £17,000 project on the shores of Loch Ness came to a sad end when the head of the giant sculpture broke off.
The creature's body then disintegrated in strong winds, with balloons floating off in all directions around the loch.
About 35 young people had spent days working on the 180ft-long "Monsterness" project.
But the end result left them feeling a bit deflated.
Most of the balloons ended up in nearby fields.
Organiser Isobel Grigor said: "Unfortunately, after Nessie's head came off, the wind came up and demolished the entire monster.
"We are going to have to collect all the balloons from the field and we will make sure there is no environmental damage."
The project was to highlight a new website called www.leavinghomeinthehighlands.org. Set up by the Calman Trust, it offers guidance to people planning to leave home for the first time.
Dutch balloon artist Guido oversaw the construction in a field beside Bona Lighthouse, Lochend.
Calman team leader Isobel said last night: "In a way, the young people have learned from this setback as much as if everything had gone according to plan.
"I am extremely impressed by their resilience."

Apocalypto brings out what's unique and gripping in Gibson as a director.
It's pure adrenaline -- a tremendously exciting chase movie, shot in Mexico,
that just happens to be set in ancient Maya with dialogue spoken in
Yucatec Maya, with English subtitles.
Actually, you'd better not be gore-shy, because Apocalypto is one brutal and bloody ride.
The plot, cooked up by Gibson and Farhad Safinia, focuses on Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a braveheart if ever there was one. Even women and children are killed when his village is attacked by another tribe. After hiding his pregnant wife and young son in a cave, Jaguar goes on the run experiencing adventures that would give Indiana Jones the screaming meemies. The movie flies by fast enough to cause whiplash. Youngblood, 25, is a Comanche and Cree Indian from Texas, and he holds the screen every treacherous inch of the way, suffering penitential hardships from spears, snakes and tribal rulers intent on removing his heart while it's still beating.

This being Gibson, there's more to the film than the rush. It's impossible not to see parallels to our own cultured civilization, one that knowingly destroys its environment and sends troops to Iraq as human sacrifices. Gibson has made a film of blunt provocation and bruising beauty -- it's breathtaking to watch a jaguar racing in the jungle alongside the man who is named after the beast. Say what you will about Gibson, he's a filmmaker right down to his nerve endings.

A snatched picture purporting to be of Madeleine McCann in north Morocco was published last night, generating new momentum in the search for her.

Gerry and Kate McCann called last night for the picture, taken on August 31 by a Spanish tourist and handed to the McCanns’ lawyers yesterday morning, to be fully investigated.

The picture shows a light-skinned, blonde-haired girl being carried in a sling on a Moroccan woman’s back near the town of Zinat. It is the fourth reported sighting of a girl fitting Madeleine’s description in Morocco since she disappeared on May 3 but the first published picture.

A Spanish newspaper reported yesterday that another tourist saw a girl resembling Madeleine as she drove through the town of Zaio in northern Morocco at the end of May.

The woman said that Portuguese police were not interested in her report because they assumed that Madeleine was already dead.

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said last night: “The picture poses serious questions. The child does appear to look like Madeleine. Kate and Gerry are keen to establish what exactly we are seeing here.”

Clara Torres, a tourist from Albacete, Spain, who took the picture published last night, said that she had thought immediately of the missing toddler. She told the Spanish radio station COPE last night: “As soon as I took the photo we were struck by the little girl, who was very blonde. Then yesterday [Monday] we heard on the news that there were various people who said they had seen Madeleine in Morocco. I ran to the computer, down-loaded the photos and started to amplify the photo, and when we saw it we realised yes, it could be her. It sent shivers down my spine.

“Although it’s not 100 per cent certain, there’s a strong possibility it could be Madeleine and if it is it could provide a twist to everything that has happened.”

She said she handed the photograph, for which she has not received any payment, into the British Embassy and spoke to the McCanns’ lawyers yesterday morning after deciding that Spanish authorities were taking too long to carry out tests on the picture.

Mr Mitchell said yesterday: “This picture was brought to the attention of the relevant authorities as soon as we received it. Kate and Gerry are naturally very keen for it it to be thoroughly investigated as quickly as possible.”

It is expected that it will now be analysed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre using face-mapping technology.

The latest development comes after a report from another Spanish woman who is convinced that she saw Madeleine in the town of Zaio in northern Morocco at the end of May.

The woman said that she saw a girl she believed was Madeleine being led by a Moroccan woman in Muslim dress. It is reported that a gust of wind blew the child’s hat off, revealing her blonde hair underneath.

There were two sightings of a blonde girl matching Madeleine’s description in Marrakesh on May 9. The tourists who reported the sightings have both complained of a lack of interest from detectives.

Mr and Mrs McCann have also been concerned at the apparent lack of efforts by police to follow up potential sightings of Madeleine, particularly in Morocco.

Mrs McCann has always believed that her daughter could have been smuggled to Morocco within hours of her disappearance. The 30-minute ferry crossing from Spain to Tangiers is a five-hour drive from Praia da Luz, where the family were holidaying when Madeleine disappeared.

Later a source close to the family said: “The McCanns are not going to get their hopes up until the photograph has been sent for forensic examination. It obviously needs a lot of work done on it.”

A spokesman for the Spanish Government said last night: “The police are taking the claim seriously enough to have sent it on to their colleagues at Interpol.”

The picture was published as it emerged that the McCanns could be prosecuted for using a private security company in the search for their daughter, even though a senior Portuguese prosecutor admitted that she may have been abducted. The use of investigators by the McCanns has led to deep concern among the police and judicial authorities in Portugal, where it is illegal for private detectives to become involved in criminal cases.

A source close to the McCanns’ legal team has confirmed the involvement of Control Risks Group (CRG), but insisted that it is simply providing advice on the search for Madeleine. He said: “You can assume that they are doing some things that the Portuguese police can’t do.” Private investigators unconnected to CRG are believed to be already working in Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

A Chihuahua puppy born in Japan with a natural heart shaped pattern on his coat has captured the hearts of animal lovers around the world.

Heart-kun, as he has been named by owner Emiko Sakurada, was born on May 18, 2007, one of a litter of puppies at the Pucchin Dogs shop.

His natural heart-shaped markings on his fur have made him an instant star in Japan. And it was a case of puppy love across the world as the tiny dog made television appearances worldwide.

Shop owner Ms Sakurada got the surprise of her life when she saw the birthmark heart markings in the fur of her tiny pooch.

She said it was the first time a puppy with these marks had been born out of the 1,000 animals that she has bred.

Since Heart-kun was born, he has brought a lot of luck, according to Ms Sakurada. He sister got lucky on the lottery and won a concert ticket.

Heart-kun's owner has been inundated with requests from people wanting to purchase the unique puppy. But they can keep their paws off him, she says, for her little four-legged friend ain't going nowhere!

A dwarf performer at the Edinburgh fringe festival had to be rushed to hospital after his penis got stuck to a vacuum cleaner during an act that went horribly awry.

Daniel Blackner, or "Captain Dan the Demon Dwarf", was due to perform at the Circus of Horrors at the festival known for its oddball, offbeat performances.

The main part of his act saw him appear on stage with a vacuum cleaner attached to his member through a special attachment.

The attachment broke before the performance and Blackner tried to fix it using extra-strong glue, but unfortunately only let it dry for 20 seconds instead of the 20 minutes required.

He then joined it directly to his organ. The end result? A solid attachment, laughter, mortification and ... hospitalisation.

"It was the most embarrassing moment of my life when I got wheeled into a packed AE with a vacuum attached to me," Blackner said.

"I just wished the ground could swallow me up. Luckily, they saw me quickly so the embarrassment was short-lived."

BEIJING - The world's tallest man married a woman who's two-thirds his height and half his age, holding a traditional Mongolian ceremony Thursday with great fanfare at the tomb of Kublai Khan.

Bao Xishun, a 7-foot-9 herdsman from Inner Mongolia, met his bride earlier this year after searching high and low, sending advertisements around the world. It turns out he didn't have to look far — 5-foot-6 saleswoman Xia Shujian hails from his hometown of Chifeng.

Bao wore a specially designed light blue gown topped with a gold vest, and rode to his bride's camp in front of the tomb in a cart pulled by two camels, AP Television News reported. A limo followed the cart.

In keeping with Mongolian tradition, the bride's attendants tried to "stop" Bao from getting into the camp. But they relented after the giant groom's sincere appeals, and he was offered tea by the bride's relatives, symbolizing that he had been accepted into her family.

He did not kowtow to his parents and in-laws because of his extraordinary height and arthritis in his knees, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Bao, 56, and Xia, 28, married in a civil ceremony in March. This time, more than 2,000 people turned out for the ceremonial nuptials, including relatives, locals and a large crowd of journalists.

Bao was confirmed last year by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest person. Xinhua said his growth was normal until age 16, when a growth spurt shot him up to his current height within seven years.

He was in the news in December after he used his long arms to save two dolphins by pulling plastic out of their stomachs.

The dolphins got sick after nibbling on plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in Liaoning province. Attempts to use surgical instruments to remove the plastic failed because the dolphins' stomachs contracted in response to the instruments, Chinese media reported.

Doctors decided to check his blood-alcohol level because his mother was drunk when she arrived to give birth.

What they saw frightened them.

A doctor tells the news agency that 12 hours after he was born, the boy had a blood-alcohol level six times the legal limit for driving. That means he was drunk before he was even born. He weighed five pounds, seven ounces at birth.

Doctors say the baby will likely suffer permanent neurological damage from his mother's drinking.

A gray beard and whiskers might be common on adults, but in Parigi Moutong regency in Central Sulawesi they can be seen growing on a one-month-old baby.

Rasya Alansya -- the son of Muhammad Rifai and his wife Mitra Jayanti of Maesa subdistrict, in Parigi Kota district -- has attracted many visitors wanting to see the rare sight with their very own eyes.

There was even a rumor he was born with the Arabic word for "God" written on his ear. That rumor was found to be untrue, but the gray beard, some five centimeters long, and the whiskers are clearly visible.

"I don't have the medical explanation for the beard and whiskers on this baby," Central Sulawesi Health Office head, Abdullah, told The Jakarta Post.

Parigi Moutong Regent Longky Djanggola was among the onlookers. He advised the baby's parents to keep the beard and whiskers unshaved as a sign of gratitude, and to monitor growth on a day-to-day basis.

The 4.5 kg baby appears to be blissfully unaware of all the attention he is receiving. His parents say he loves to smile and rarely cries like other babies.

The baby's mother, 16-year-old Mitra, said she never thought her child would be born with a beard and whiskers.

At first, she thought the beard and whiskers were pieces of cotton and tried to brush them away, but couldn't. "So, I just let it be and it turned out there was a beard and whiskers," she said.

But the boy's father, 20-year-old Rifai, said the placenta was extraordinary; colored red, white and blue.

"I was surprised when I saw the placenta upon burying it," he said.

Burying the placenta after birth is a common practice throughout the country. In Central Sulawesi, the placenta must be buried next to the family home, after being wrapped in a clean, new white cloth.

Mitra said she was grateful for what God had given them.

"I hope my son grows up to have a special gift."

The goal was rapid-fire hot dog consumption, not pummeling an opponent in the ring, but like a particularly bloody boxing match, it was disturbing to watch.

Joey Chestnut, a 23-year-old engineering student from California, ate a world-record 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes yesterday to unseat the six-time champ, Takeru Kobayashi, at the Nathan’s Famous hot-dog eating contest in Coney Island.

Chants of “U.S.A.” and “Joey! Joey!” rose from the crowd when Mr. Chestnut hoisted the Mustard Yellow International Belt of the champion.

“The Fourth of July brought this out,” he said, when asked where he found the strength to consume more hot dogs than a large family at a holiday picnic. It was his first victory in the 92nd annual event.

Mr. Kobayashi bowed and was humble in defeat. But he also pointed straight at Mr. Chestnut and yelled, “I will definitely beat him next year.”

While there were plenty of patriots in the crowd cheering for an American to win the belt for the first time this decade, Mr. Kobayashi clearly has established a following. Japanese and American fans flooded the stage in search of autographs after Mr. Kobayashi lost the championship this year by three hot dogs and buns. One woman carried a sign that read in Japanese, “If we get married, I’ll make you hot dogs every day.”

Another fan yelled “Tora, tora, tora!” just before the event began.

The showdown more than lived up to expectations and a weeklong buildup. Last month, in a Tempe, Ariz., qualifying contest, Mr. Chestnut broke Mr. Kobayashi’s world record by 6 hot dogs, stuffing down 59 and a bite in 12 minutes, or one every 12 seconds or so.

Then Mr. Kobayashi reported on his Web site in late June that he had an unexplained ailment that limited the motion of his jaw: he could open his mouth no wider than a fingertip, and even then with pain. To help relieve the stress on his jaw, he had a wisdom tooth removed, leading to swelling.

As recently as Friday, he appeared unable to eat anything more substantial than yogurt and rice porridge, making it unclear whether he would be able to compete. A few hours before the event, Mr. Kobayashi went to an acupuncturist to relieve his pain.

Like the 15-round epics between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, the outcome was unclear until the end. The rivals matched each other frank for frank. Mr. Chestnut, who has also won championships for eating grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken wings and deep-fried asparagus, jumped out to an early lead, but was never more than three hot dogs ahead.

Mr. Kobayashi, who wolfed down nearly 18 pounds of pan-seared cow brains to win the Glutton Bowl, made a push in the last several minutes to finish in a tie. The two men were eating so fast, stuffing several hot dogs in their mouth at once, that midway through the contest, several of the 15 other entrants had stopped eating and were watching the main event at center stage.

“It was kind of hard to concentrate on my own stuff,” said Erik Denmark, a challenger from Seattle, Wash. “I felt the emotion of the event.”

Since both leaders appeared to have consumed 63 hot dogs and buns at the finish, the judges spent several minutes in a somewhat bizarre recount. According to the rules, whatever is in contestants’ mouths when the buzzer rings counts toward their total, assuming they can swallow it.

Mr. Chestnut seemed to have finished what he had started, while Mr. Kobayashi apparently spit out some of what was in his mouth, leading to a recalculation. The judges also counted the scraps of food left on the contestants’ plates.

When Mr. Chestnut was announced as the winner with 66 hot dogs and buns eaten, Mr. Kobayashi slumped in his chair, draped in a silver-colored blanket typically used by marathon runners.

Some spectators suspected that the reports of the precompetition mouth injury suffered by Mr. Kobayashi was a hoax created by the organizers to drum up publicity for the event, which was broadcast on ESPN. Others in the crowd, which spilled out onto Surf Avenue, said Mr. Kobayashi had been trying to psych out Mr. Chestnut.

Scott Johnston, 42, who drove from Potomac Falls, Va., with his twin brother and nephew to see the event, held up a sign saying Mr. Kobayashi had “Chestnut-itis.”

“He is playing head games,” Mr. Johnston said. “He’s the champ, so he’s the one to knock off.”

Mr. Johnston said he, his brother and the 14-year-old nephew would hold their own contest to see who could eat three hot dogs the fastest. For protection, he brought along a roll of Rolaids.

The internationally renowned professor of Roman archaeology Jan Kees Haalebos of the Catholic University Nijmegen appears to have died shortly after deciphering a Roman curse.

In the year 2000 a amateur archeologist found the table of curse in the Dutch city of Bodegraven. After his find he unrolled the lead table.
After that he gave it to the autorities, who did a good job on the preservation.
Prof. Haalebos of the Nijmegen University decoded much of the text, which shows the names of 21 roman soldiers, but on the evening before he died he found out the word ‘Avern’ (from Avernus, the dark underworld) .
Only now some other archeologists have finished his work. Only 3 lines ar still unknown.

LOS ANGELES -- Paris Hilton was sent screaming and crying back to jail Friday after a judge ruled that she must serve out her sentence behind bars rather than in the comfort of her Hollywood Hills home.

"It's not right!" shouted Hilton, who violated her probation in a reckless driving case. "Mom!" she cried out to her mother.

Hours earlier, the 26-year-old hotel heiress was taken handcuffed from her home in a black-and-white police car, paparazzi sprinting in pursuit and helicopters broadcasting live from above. She entered the courtroom disheveled and weeping, hair askew, without makeup, wearing a fuzzy gray sweat shirt over slacks.

She cried throughout the hearing, dabbing her eyes, and her body shook constantly. Several times she turned to her parents, seated behind her in the courtroom, and mouthed, "I love you."

Hilton was taken to a treatment center at the downtown Twin Towers jail for medical and psychiatric examination to determine which facility she will be held in, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

"She'll be there for at least a couple of days," he said.

Despite being ordered to serve the remainder of her original 45-day sentence, Hilton could still be released early. Inmates are given a day off their terms for every four days of good behavior, and her days in home detention counted as time served.

Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer was calm but apparently irked by Sheriff Lee Baca's decision to release Hilton three days into her sentence due to an unspecified "medical condition."

"I at no time condoned the actions of the sheriff and at no time told him I approved the actions," Sauer said. "At no time did I approve the defendant being released from custody to her home."

The hearing was requested by the city attorney's office, which had prosecuted Hilton and wanted Baca held in contempt for releasing Hilton despite Sauer's express order that she must serve her time in jail.

The judge took no action on the contempt request.

A member of the county counsel's staff said Baca was willing to come to court with medical personnel. The judge did not take him up on the offer.

Assistant City Attorney Dan F. Jeffries argued that Hilton's incarceration was purely up to the judge. "Her release after only three days erodes confidence in the judicial system," he said.

Hilton's attorney, Richard Hutton, implored the judge to order a hearing in his chambers to hear testimony about Hilton's medical condition before making a decision. The judge did not respond to that suggestion.

Another of her attorneys, Steve Levine, said, "The sheriff has determined that because of her medical situation, (jail) is a dangerous place for her."

"The court's role here is to let the Sheriff's Department run the jail," he said.

The judge interrupted several times to say that he had received a call last Wednesday from an undersheriff informing him that Hilton had a medical condition and that he would submit papers to the judge to consider. He said the papers never arrived.

Every few minutes, the judge would interrupt proceedings, state the time on the clock, and note that the papers still had not arrived.

He also noted that he had heard that a private psychiatrist visited Hilton in jail, and he wondered if that person played a role in deciding her medical needs.

The last attorney to speak was another deputy city attorney, David Bozanich, who declared, "This is a simple case. There was a court. The Sheriff's Department chose to violate that order. There is no ambiguity."

Hilton's twisted jailhouse saga began Sept. 7, when she failed a sobriety test after police saw her weaving down a street in her Mercedes-Benz on what she said was a late-night hamburger run.

She pleaded no contest to reckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines. In the months that followed she was stopped twice while driving on a suspended license. The second stop landed her in Sauer's courtroom.

Back before Sauer on Friday, Hilton's entire body trembled as the final pitch was made for her further incarceration. She clutched a ball of tissue and tears ran down her face.

Seconds later, the judge announced his decision: "The defendant is remanded to county jail to serve the remainder of her 45-day sentence. This order is forthwith."

Hilton screamed.

Eight deputies immediately ordered all spectators out of the courtroom. Hilton's mother, Kathy, threw her arms around her husband, Rick, and sobbed uncontrollably.

Deputies escorted Hilton out of the room, holding each of her arms as she looked back.

PAW PAW, Mich. — Why did the 21-year-old cross the road?

Benjamin Carpenter, 21, was crossing a Michigan highway in his wheelchair when he became stuck in a semitrailer's grille and pushed for miles before the unknowing driver was pulled over, police said on Thursday.

Carpenter escaped unharmed, saying, "It was quite a ride," police said.

Carpenter was attempting to cross on Wednesday when the light turned green and his wheelchair became hooked onto the front grille of the truck, which reached 50 mph during the 4-mile trip down Red Arrow Highway, Michigan State Police Trooper Michael Sinke said witnesses reported.

Carpenter was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He had been secured to his wheelchair by a seat belt.

Witnesses reported that the light turned green, so the truck took off, never seeing the wheelchair in front of him or the fact that it had attached to his front grill. When officers stopped the truck at a private business, Carpenter was in a calm state.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- A Dutch reality television show in which a supposedly dying woman had to pick one of three contestants to whom she would donate a kidney was revealed as an elaborate hoax on Friday.

The show, which the broadcaster had said aimed to focus attention on a shortage of donor organs in the Netherlands, was condemned by Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende before broadcast Friday night and sparked controversy worldwide.

Identified only as "Lisa," the 37-year-old woman who had been said to be suffering from a brain tumor was to base her selection on the person's history and conversations with the candidates' families and friends.

In the last minutes of the program, she was revealed as a healthy actress and producers stunned viewers by saying "The Big Donorshow" was a hoax.

The contestants were also part of the deception, although all three are genuine kidney patients.

"Their life is bitter reality," the host said after revealing the deception, just at the moment at which Lisa was to have stated her choice.

Dutch Education Minister Ronald Plasterk hailed the show as a "fantastic stunt" and an intelligent way to draw attention to the shortage of donor organs.

Heated debate expected

The show is expected to set off heated debate between those who believe reality television has gone too far and others who believe the publicity was generated for a good cause.

Producers apologized to viewers and said they hoped "outrage" over the show would turn into anger over the lack of organs for transplant.

Viewers in the Netherlands were asked to give advice via text messages in the 80-minute show, and appeals ran throughout for people to donate their organs.

Early in the show Lisa was shown selecting three people from 25 candidate profiles who matched her blood group.

"It feels like playing God," said a fraught-looking Lisa. "Think of it as playing Santa Claus," replied the show's host.

The show had set off a storm of criticism, both at home and abroad, though some kidney patients said ahead of the show that they approved of it because it drew attention to their plight.

Balkenende had said the show was detrimental to the whole business of organ donation and it would do the reputation of the Netherlands no good abroad, Dutch news agency ANP said.

Dutch embassies received complaints from people expressing their shock over the show.

Public broadcaster BNN, which came up with the idea, said it wanted to draw attention to the growing shortage of organ donors in the Netherlands.

"Money has never been part of this thing, and no money will be made from this," said BNN Chairman Laurans Drillich.

Callers to a local radio station had suggested the whole thing could be a hoax by BNN to build up its ratings.

Brussels, May 25 - Tragedy strikes in Belgium: a mother forgot her 5-month-old son in the car for the whole die and found him dead after leaving work. It happened on Thursday, in Hal, a town near Brussels, where a mother of three left for work in the morning to take the two older children to school and to take the baby to the babysitter. But after dropping by school, she forgot about the baby and went straight to work, leaving the baby sitting in the backseat of the parked car.
Leaving work after 4pm, the woman got back into her car and, as usual, drove to the babysitter's house to pick up the baby.
Meeting with the babysitter's confusion, the forgetful mother realised what had happened. By the time she got back to the car, her baby was already dead. The Brussels Public Prosecution have opened an inquiry on the mother's negligence. The autopsy will ascertain the exact cause and hour of the baby's death.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — A 400-pound gorilla escaped from his enclosure and ran amok in a Rotterdam zoo Friday, biting one woman, dragging her around, and causing panic among dozens of visitors before he was finally subdued, officials and a witness said.
The Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo was evacuated and the 11-year-old gorilla, named Bokito, was eventually contained in a restaurant within the park, police spokeswoman Yvette de Rave said.

Four people were injured, including the woman who was bitten, zoo director Ton Dorrestijn said.

Bokito was shot with a sedative dart and recaptured, said zoo spokeswoman Lilian Jonkers, but she couldn't say what his condition was. It was not immediately clear how he managed to climb the high stone walls surrounding his enclosure.

"He got over the moat, which in itself is remarkable, because gorillas can't swim," Dorrestijn said. "He got onto a path for visitors and started running and went at full speed through tables and diners at the Oranje restaurant."

A witness, Robert de Jonge, told NOS radio that he didn't see the gorilla escape but began following it and tried to help after he saw people running and screaming that the animal had grabbed a woman.

"I saw the beast running through the park with a woman behind him, him grabbing her forearm," De Jonge said.

At a distance of around 30 yards, he saw the gorilla lie down near the woman and then heard her scream.

"He bit her, or I think he bit her, because when he stood up his mouth was covered in blood," De Jonge said.

He said he then stopped to tell arriving police what had happened and ran with them as they traced the gorilla to a nearby restaurant terrace.

The zoo was packed with visitors as many Dutch took advantage of a national holiday Thursday to make a long weekend.

"Everyone was in panic, running away, screaming, wailing, screaming kids running around, I don't know what all, kids without parents — it was a total drama," De Jonge said.

Children cowered in their parents' arms as the gorilla loped past.

People tried to hide inside the restaurant and were trying to bar the door, but fled as the gorilla approached, De Jonge said. Bokito then punched through the glass door and ran inside.

"They were all in panic — the animal, too, I mean — and all the people ran outside the restaurant, and zoo personnel were running up and they were able to keep the animal inside by barricading the doors with garden furniture and things," he said.

De Jonge said he later saw the woman "covered in blood," but walking unaided.

THE parents of missing Madeleine McCann faced fresh agony last night when police announced they were scaling down the search.
Police and volunteers have been hard at work scouring the 150-square-mile area around the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz where Maddy was snatched from the family’s holiday apartment eight days ago.

But the officer in charge of the investigation has decided to call off the local hunt because nothing has been found.
The shock decision prompted increased criticism of their bungled inquiry into the abduction of the three-year-old Briton and the way the hunt for the toddler has been conducted.

Police spokesman Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa, said: searches of the local area “initiated as soon as the disappearance was reported” were “coming to an end”. He added: “All the places have been checked. The results are zero.”

But he added that police were “still looking” for Maddy. “We are pursuing lines of investigation. It was a decision of the officer in charge of the case. So I think they have changed something.”

Mr Sousa refused to confirm if police now believe Maddy is being held in another part of Portugal or has been smuggled abroad. “I will not speculate on this,” he said.

Maddy’s parents also faced the harrowing task yesterday of scanning CCTV film for a glimpse of their kidnapped daughter.

Footage at a garage in Portugal captured an image of three suspects, including a woman, with a girl who matched Maddy’s description. The camera also caught the car’s British number plate and the registration has been circulated by Interpol and British police.

Kate and Gerry McCann were driven at speed from their holiday apartment to a police station in Portimao to help officers examine the tapes after Mrs McCann again went to the local church to pray for her daughter.

Bill Henderson, the British Consul in the Algarve, was seen leaving the police headquarters while Mr and Mrs McCann were still inside.

Two of the three suspects in the CCTV footage that may show the missing girl have been identified by a man who claimed he caught them photographing his own child two weeks ago.

The witness, Portuguese-born Nuno Lourenco who lives in Germany, said the gang attempted to abduct his own young daughter.

He told detectives that he saw a man of English appearance photographing his daughter, described as strikingly similar in appearance to Maddy, on April 30 in Sagres, a town just a few miles from the holiday complex where the McCann family was staying.

The witness, who with his German wife has two children aged two and four, said he chased the man, who fled, jumping into a car with a woman and another man before speeding off. Mr Lourenco is believed to have provided the authorities with a photograph taken on his mobile phone.

The witness has told officers he was “100 per cent certain” they were the same people caught on CCTV with the girl matching Maddy’s description hours after she went missing.

The description of the woman also matches that given by a witness who spotted someone acting suspiciously outside Madeleine’s bedroom on the night of her disappearance. The CCTV footage from the garage shows a young girl with a blonde, middle-aged woman and two men. The child apparently wanted to say something, which made staff suspicious.

THE mother of missing three-year-old Madeleine McCann wept for her daughter today at an emotional Mother’s Day service.
Kate McCann and husband Gerry were joined by family from the UK at a Portuguese mass in the resort of Praia da Luz, three days after the youngster disappeared.

Their visit to the church fell on Mother’s Day which is marked in Portugal with flowers which are laid at the feet of the Virgin Mary during the service.

In an emotional mass, Madeleine’s mother was quietly presented with a bunch of five roses by 14-year-old Altar girl Emily Seromenho, whose own mother is English.

At the end of the service, Mrs McCann then lined up with Portuguese mothers and walked to the Altar laying her flowers at the foot of the Virgin Mary.

Pausing momentarily and gazing up at the statue Mrs McCann rejoined her family and prayed silently for Madeleine’s safe return.

Portuguese police believe the missing three-year-old British girl was abducted.

Guilhermino Encarnacao, director of the judicial police in the Faro region, said police were hopeful she was still alive and believe she is still in Portugal, possibly even in the Algarve.

He added that detectives have a suspect in mind but refused to reveal any details other than to say that they had an artist’s impression, for fear of endangering Madeleine’s life.

It is not clear whether this means that police are looking for a specific, named individual, or simply someone fitting a description.

Speaking 24 hours after discovering three-year-old Maddie had vanished from their holiday apartment, distraught dad Gerry said: “Words cannot describe the anguish and despair we are feeling as the parents of a beautiful daughter.”

As wife Kate poignantly clutched Maddie’s pink teddy, he added haltingly: “We request anyone with any information relating to Madeleine’s disappearance should please contact Portuguese police to help us get her back to safety.

“Please if you have Madeleine, please let her come home to her mummy, daddy, brother and sister. Everyone can understand how distressing this current situation is.”

The couple, both 38-year-old doctors, looked red-eyed as they stood just yards from their holiday flat. Earlier, shattered relatives and friends told of the heart-stopping moment mum Kate discovered her precious daughter was missing.

Kate and Gerry, a consultant cardiologist, had left Maddie asleep with their baby twins as they ate at a tapas restaurant 50 yards from their holiday apartment in Portugal’s Algarve.

The pair took turns to check on the children every half hour. But when Kate returned to the room at 10pm on Thursday there was no sign of her angel-faced girl.

As a desperate police hunt continued in the resort of Praia da Luz last night, Maddie’s aunt Trish Cameron told how distraught Gerry described the scene in a frantic late-night phone call.

Trish, of Dumbarton, Scotland, said: “The kids were all sound asleep, windows shut, shutters shut.

“Kate went back at 10pm to check. The front door was lying open, the window had been tampered with, the shutters had been jemmied open and Maddie was missing.

“She came screaming back to the group crying, ‘They’ve taken her, they’ve taken her’. Gerry was crying and roaring like a bull.

“Obviously someone has been watching them, watching the children, seeing where they stayed and seeing they were left alone. It just doesn’t bear thinking about.”

Maddie’s brother and sister — two-year-old IVF twins Sean and Amelie — were left safely in their cots.

Trish, who plans to jet out to help with the search, went on: “Kate ran and told my brother. He was distraught on the phone to me, breaking his heart.

“He said, ‘Maddie’s been abducted, she’s been abducted’. Nothing else was touched in the apartment, no valuables taken, no passports.” Describing Maddie, Trish added: “She’s an absolutely beautiful wee blonde girl, with blue-green eyes.

“One distinguishing feature is that the pupil of her right eye runs down into the iris.”

Cops yesterday cordoned off the apartment and officers with sniffer dogs were leading the search.

The Sun has offered a £10,000 reward for information that may lead to the youngster being found.

Last night local reports claimed dogs tracked her scent to a supermarket before the trail ran cold. The store’s CCTV cameras were so basic they did not make recordings.

Meanwhile British tourist George Burke claimed he had seen a couple carrying a young child early yesterday morning. Mr Burke, from Liverpool, was driving back from Lagos, just a few miles from Praia de Luz. He said: “I couldn’t see them clearly as it was dark and windy — but I thought it was odd. They scurried down a side road.”

Kate and Gerry, from Rothley, Leics, are believed to have been on holiday with a group of other medical workers. The party comprised nine adults and eight children. It is understood Maddie, who turns four next Saturday, is due to start school in September.

Distraught Kate rang long-time friends Jon and Michelle Corner, the twins’ godparents, at their Merseyside home to break the news.

Jon, whose wife grew up with GP Kate in their home city of Liverpool, said: “She phoned at about 3am. She just blurted out that Maddie had been abducted.

“She said, ‘They’ve broken the shutter on the window and taken my little girl’. She’s still devastated. She’s very upset that the police don’t seem to be doing anything.”

The McCanns were staying at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, western Algarve — a popular spot with Brits. They booked the break with holiday firm Mark Warner.

The complex consists of individual villa-style accommodation mixed with small bars, restaurants, cafés, boutiques and shops.

Resort boss John Hill said 70 staff and guests searched until 4.30am after the family raised the alarm, while border police, Spanish cops and airports were notified. He said: “It was a very emotional and frantic night.”

But he insisted there was NO physical evidence Maddie had been abducted from the apartment. He said: “We are still hoping Madeleine is asleep under a bush and we’ll find her soon.”

He said the family’s apartment was surrounded by others — all with “sophisticated” door locks.

Guests were quizzed to check if they saw anyone acting suspiciously. Mr Hill said Mark Warner offers families a babysitting service where they can leave children for the night.

He added: “Those facilities were available but were not being used.”

Counsellors were being flown out from Britain to assist the stricken parents, he added.

John Buck, the British Ambassador in Portugal, drove in from the capital Lisbon to be with the family after they begged him for help.

He confirmed that three family liaison officers from Leicestershire Police had now arrived and were with the family.

Among those who joined Thursday night’s search for the tot were British expats, holidaymakers and off-duty police officers.

Paul Moyes, 47, from Cheshire, owns a holiday apartment with wife Susan in the McCanns’ block.

He said: “There was a knock on our door at about 11.30pm from a hotel guest telling us a girl was missing and asking us to help.”

Family pal Gill Renwick revealed how panicking Kate sent her a text saying: “I need help.”

She said: “Kate was at the police station in hysterics. When we spoke she said the police weren’t doing enough.”

Speaking about the £1,500 family holiday, pal Gill went on: “It’s the first time they have done this.

“They are very careful parents. They chose Mark Warner because it is a family-friendly resort.”

Trish Cameron added: “In hindsight, yes, Gerry and Kate wish they hadn’t left the children alone, but it’s hard when you’re on holiday. They’re excellent parents and very protective of their children.”

Maddie’s worried grandparents have flown to Portugal to join the search. Brian and Susan Healy said as they headed for the airport: “We’re worried sick.”

The couple had earlier been comforted by friends at their smart semi in Mossley Hill, Liverpool.

Family friend Pat Perkins, 61, said: “Susan can barely speak. We’re just trying to stay positive.

“Kate and Gerry are such good parents. It’s a very loving family, they didn’t leave their children in any danger. You just don’t expect something so awful to happen.

“I recommended Portugal as a holiday destination. They love children over there.”

Johannesburg - A gang hijacked a man and forced him to take them to his home where they superglued him to an exercise bicycle and robbed him on Wednesday, said Johannesburg paramedics.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said the man, in his 50s, was hijacked in Bryanston and forced at gunpoint to take his attackers to his home in Midrand.

"The victim was then forced to strip, after which he was superglued to the seat of an exercise bicycle, his hands were superglued, as were his feet and then his mouth was superglued shut," said Stokoe.

The attackers, dressed in suits and armed with handguns and what appeared to be an automatic assault rifle, ransacked the house and safe "while helping themselves to Chivas Regal and the like".

Stokoe said the attack took place about 12:30 and the man was rescued when his partner arrived home about three hours later.

"Chemicals were used in combination with vaseline to crystallise and help loosen the superglue.

"Netcare 911 staff including one of the trauma support counsellors were on scene for some time helping the victim and his partner."

Australian rescuers were on Friday trying to solve the "Mary Celeste" style mystery of a yacht found floating off the coast with its engine running, food on its table ready to eat, but no crew. The 12-meter (36 feet) catamaran was found 80 nautical miles off Townsville on the northeast coast, but there was no sign of the three crewmen who had set sail from Queensland state bound for Australia's west coast on Sunday.

"What they found was a bit strange in that everything was normal, there was just no sign of the crew," Jon Hall from emergency management in Queensland told local radio on Friday. Hall said the yacht's sails were up but one was badly shredded. He said the engine was running, there was food on the table, a laptop was turned on, and the radio and global positioning satellite (GPS) were working. Three life jackets and survival equipment, including an emergency beacon, were found on board, but no life rafts.

The Mary Celeste was an abandoned "ghost ship" found off the coast of Portugal in 1872. None of the Mary Celeste's crew or passengers were ever found. The KAZ 11 was spotted adrift on the outer Great Barrier Reef on Wednesday. Rescue crews boarded the vessel on Friday but there was no sign of the three crew men, aged 56, 63 and 69.

Police said weather conditions at sea on Sunday and Monday were rough. "There was a fair sort of a wind out there but it's improved since then, so who knows what could've happened," said Police Chief Superintendent Roy Wall.

Rescuers have retrieved the boat's GPS system to analyze data for clues to the mysterious disappearance of the crew. "That will now enable us to track backwards where this yacht has actually been in the last few days, and we're hoping that can pinpoint the search area for the missing crew," said Hall.

Between his first and second bursts of gunfire, the Virginia Tech gunman mailed a package to NBC headquarters in New York containing photos of him brandishing guns and video of him delivering an angry, profanity-laced tirade about rich kids and hedonism.

"You had a hundred billion chances and ways to have avoided today," 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui says in a harsh monotone, in an excerpt shown on "NBC Nightly News." "But you decided to spill my blood. You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off."
NBC said the package contained an 1,800-word diatribe and 29 photos, 11 of them showing him aiming handguns at the camera. Much of the rant is incoherent and filled with obscenities. He rails against Christianity and the rich.
"Your Mercedes wasn't enough, you brats," he says, apparently reading from a manifesto. "Your golden necklaces weren't enough you snobs. Your trust funds wasn't enough. Your vodka and cognac wasn't enough. All your debaucheries weren't enough. Those weren't enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything.

The package, which arrived at NBC two days after Cho killed 32 people and committed suicide in the deadliest one-man shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, bore a Postal Service stamp showing that it had been mailed at a Virginia post office at 9:01 a.m. Monday, about an hour and 45 minutes after Cho first opened fire.
That would explain one of the biggest mysteries about the massacre: Where the gunman was and what he did during that two-hour window between the first burst of gunfire at a high-rise dorm, and the second attack, at a classroom building.

Some of the pictures show him smiling. Some depict him brandishing two weapons at a time, one in each hand. He wears a khaki-colored military-style vest, fingerless gloves, a black T-shirt, a backpack and a backwards, black baseball cap. Another photo shows him swinging a hammer two-fisted. Another shows an angry-looking Cho holds a gun to his temple.
The package was sent by overnight delivery but did not arrive at NBC until Wednesday morning. It had apparently been delayed because it had the wrong ZIP code, NBC said.
An alert postal employee brought the package to NBC's attention after noticing the Blacksburg return address and a name similar to the words reportedly found scrawled in red ink on Cho's arm after the bloodbath, "Ismail Ax," NBC said.

"I didn't have to do it. I could have left. I could have fled," he says. "But now I am no longer running. If not for me, for my children and my brothers and sisters that you (expletive). I did it for them."
He also makes references to the Columbine High massacre and the teenage killers, according to NBC.

Woman burnt by exploding sausage

A woman diner was left with horrific burns after a Portuguese sausage dish exploded in her face.

The victim was eating with friends when the accident happened at the Sporting Clube de Londres in west London.

Witnesses described how the chorizo sausage dish - which arrived already covered in flaming alcohol - burnt out of control when a waiter topped it up with rum at a table packed with people.

The restaurant owner, Rui Daniel Faria Velosa, was fined £4,000 yesterday and ordered to pay £2,000 costs for breaching safety rules after a hearing at West London Magistrates' Court.

The woman, who spent two weeks in hospital and has undergone two skin graft operations since the incident in May 2005, said: "It was as if someone had put a flame-thrower in my face."

Crocodile takes vet's arm off

POLICE in Taiwan were forced to shoot a crocodile after it bit off the arm of the zoo veterinarian treating it.
Dramatic television footage showed a police officer firing on the animal to wrest the severed limb from its jaws.

Chang Po-yu, 38, from the southern Kaohsiung city's Shou Shan Zoo, was injecting the sick crocodile with anaesthetic when it attacked him.

He was said to be in a stable condition after being rushed to hospital for an emergency operation to reattach his arm, an local official said, although it was not immediately clear whether Chang would recover.

No Screaming Allowed On Ride Called 'The Screamer'

(CBS) SACRAMENTO - Screams on a thrill ride. It's hard to imagine a ride without them. But a northern California community is saying, 'keep your mouth shut as you enjoy the ride.'

It turns out, that noise is just part of the dispute at a Sacramento amusement park which features the Scandia Screamer, a ride that's thrilling customers -- but also irritating to neighbors, who are threatening a lawsuit.

At 168 feet tall, spinning at 60 miles an hour and pulling 3.5 Gs, there is no thrill in Sacramento that compares with this screamer.

“It was breathtaking,” said one rider.

But, in fact, you're not allowed to scream.

Some neighbors who live in the shadow of the new ride are complaining about the noise, so management at the Scandia Family Fun Center enacted a strict policy: No screaming allowed on the 'screamer.'

And you can even be kicked off the ride if you do.

“If you feel like you might make noise cover your mouth like this because if we can hear a noise we're required to take you off the ride so it's aggressive,” said Steve Baddley, Scandia’s general manager. “We believe we're taking every effort to make this a really mutually-beneficial relationship between the business owner the county and the residents,” said Steve

During our visit people were getting bumped off for sounding out.

“I didn't think we were that loud,” said one rider who was ejected. “It’s hard to tell. It’s a human reaction to yell when you’re going in the sky, face-down on the freeway.”

But neighbors say the sound isn’t the only problem. They say it’s also an eyesore at night when it’s all lit up.

“It's like going from fire crackers to the atomic bomb,” said Mike Bayless, neighbor. “I mean, it’s like you’re going from small family entertainment to something that's grossly out-of-place out of place in a neighborhood.”

And then there's the issue of privacy.

“And when they’re on the top of that thing they’re looking right down in my backyard,” said John Eams, neighbor.

And now, there’s even talk amongst the neighbors of a class-action lawsuit.

“I'm certainly willing to participate in the class action lawsuit but it's going to be a long road to hoe and I'm sure we will see great loss in our property values in the interim,” said Bayless.

“I would love to hear your opinions and options. Help us implement policy or words to policy that you think might be more effective” said Baddley.

The county approved this ride after taking a lot of public input, but the neighbors say their input was not adequately considered.

Scandia says it chose that particular ride because it's one of the quietest thrill rides that you can get as far as the motor. They say they needed the ride to stay viable in a competitive marketplace.

Isn't it unbelievable that from the four pieces of artwork you'll see below,
two of them are painted circa 1500 and the other two are from around the year 2000 ??

Hieronymus, or Jerome, Bosch, b. c.1450, d. August 1516, spent his entire artistic career in the small Dutch town of Hertogenbosch, from which he derived his name.
At the time of his death, Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Bosch's works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and they were imitated in a number of paintings and prints throughout the 16th century, especially in the works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogenbosch, all of which are now lost. The artist probably never went far from home, although records exist of a commission in 1504 from Philip the Handsome (later king of Castile), for a lost Last Judgment altarpiece. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them.

The extraordinary painter Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450-1516) stands apart from the prevailing Flemish traditions in painting. His style was unique, strikingly free, and his symbolism, unforgettably vivid, remains unparalleled to this day. Marvellous and terrifying, he expresses an intense pessimism and reflects the anxieties of his time, one of social and political upheaval.

Very little is known about Bosch, which somehow seems fitting since his work is so enigmatic. We know that he adopted the name of the Dutch town of s'Hertogenbosch (near Antwerp) as his own, that he belonged to an ultra-orthodox religious community called the Brotherhood of Mary, and that in his own day he was famous. Many of his paintings are devotional, and there are several on the theme of the Passion. He is specially famous for his fantastic, demon-filled works, one of which is The Temptation of St Anthony.

The other two paintings are made by the fantastic MARK RYDEN who is influenced by Bosch.

Stick in the mud … Yang Wu and his wife, Wu Ping, have refused to move out of their home to make way for developers, despite offers of compensation and an eviction order. Their case has attracted widespread support.

Property-owning China has a new hero. Yang Wu, now better known as The Nail, has become the talk of the country for his refusal to abandon his home to property developers.
Despite an eviction order, offers of compensation and the chasm that has opened up around his home, the 51-year-old restaurateur is holding his ground in an increasingly high-profile challenge to the authorities.

Newspapers and websites have published spectacular images of the siege-like situation in Chongqing, where Mr Yang's home has been turned into an island, surrounded by a moat of mud and tractors.

The developers, who want to build a six-storey shopping mall, have reportedly offered compensation of 3.5m yuan (£233,000), a staggering sum in a country where the average income is about £1,000 a year. But Mr Yang and his family insist they are not concerned about money.
"I promise we will fight to the end," his wife, Wu Ping, told reporters outside the building site. "Even if we have to give up our lives, we will not move. This property is ours."

On Wednesday, Mr Yang placed a banner across the roof of his house declaring: "Citizens' legal property cannot be invaded."

According to local media reports, the former Kung Fu champion took a set of wooden clubs with him to fend off potential attackers, and shouted to the construction site guards: "If you dare to come up, I will beat you down."

The water and electricity have been cut off, but supporters give him food and drink, which he pulls up by rope.

Hold-outs, known as "nails" in China because they stick up despite attempts to beat them down, are becoming increasingly common in China.

Mr Yang's protest has been strengthened by its timing. Earlier this month, the National People's Congress, China's parliament, passed the country's first law to protect private property. Earlier this week, the government reported a surge in illegal land seizures by developers and local governments.

Mr Yang's case has sparked an online debate, which has been promoted even by the state-run China Daily. And the Nanfeng Metropolitan newspaper declared: "This couple are fighting for their own rights. But they are also fighting for the rights of all property owners in China and for the dignity of the property law that has just been passed."

The development companies, Chongqing Zhirun and Nanlong, said they were no longer in negotiations with Mr Yang.

"We haven't arranged negotiations with the hold-out. We talked to him before for a long time without achieving any agreement so now we are just waiting for the government to settle this issue," the manager, Wang Wei, told local reporters.

Little Miss Sunshine

I went out last night to see the movie "Little Miss Sunshine" in Het Filmhuis in Hoorn and what a great time i had with my friends!! First of all we were pleasantly surprised about Het Filmhuis. It's in the souterain of an old chapel (Mariakapel) build in medieval times and only 58 people fit in. Nice chairs, good sound quality and big screen.
We'll definately will go there again!

The Movie LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE was fantastic! Beautiful story about a family going mental, all members in their own way...

Olive is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so burdened with their own quirks, neuroses, and problems that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father Richard is a flop as a motivational speaker, and is barely on speaking terms with her mother. Olive's uncle Frank, a renowned Proust scholar, has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California.

Go see this Oscar winning movie!! We laughed sooooo hard we had to cry and also the music in this movie is brilliant!(Devotchka)

The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common, three-leafed, clover. According to tradition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally.

Clovers can have more than four leaflets. The most leaflets ever recorded is eighteen. It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover.

According to legend, each leaflet represents something: the first is for hope, the second is for faith, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck.

It is debated whether the fourth leaflet is caused genetically or environmentally. Its rarity suggests a possible recessive gene appearing at a low frequency. Alternatively, four-leaf clovers could be caused by somatic mutation or a developmental error of environmental causes. They could also be caused by the interaction of several genes that happen to segregate in the individual plant. It is possible all four explanations could apply to individual cases.
Certain companies produce "four-leaf clovers" using different means. Richard Mabey alleges, in Flora Britannica, that there are farms in the US which specialise in "four-leaf clovers", producing as many as 10,000 a day (to be sealed in plastic as "lucky charms") by feeding a secret, genetically-engineered ingredient to the plants to encourage the aberration. Mabey also states that children learn that a five-leafed clover is even luckier than a four leafed one.

Other plants may be mistaken for, or misleadingly sold as, "four-leaf clovers"; for example, Oxalis tetraphylla, a species of wood sorrel with leaves resembling a four-leaf clover
